U.S. Forest Service firefighters plan to take advantage of existing and forecasted snow accumulation to burn slash piles in the James Creek fuel treatment area northwest of Boulder. Ignition may begin Wednesday and continue throughout the week as conditions allow.

Conditions are evaluated each day of the burn to determine if ignition will take place. Wind, fuel moisture, staffing and amount of snow cover all play a factor in where and whether ignition occurs.

Due to the topography of the area pile burning activities may be visible in the foothills above Boulder, including from the City of Boulder, Boulder Heights, Lefthand Canyon and U.S. Highway 36.

So far this winter, Boulder and Clear Creek Ranger District firefighters have completed 135 acres of burning in the West Magnolia and Yankee Hill fuel treatment areas, including 2,500 hand piles and 73 machine piles. The attached photos show the burning of machine piles at West Magnolia Jan. 1 and Feb. 2, including a pair of smoldering piles after they have been mostly consumed.
