Emergency recreational sports shooting closure in effect May 10

Boulder, Colo.– Four areas on the Boulder Ranger District will be temporarily closed to Recreational Sports Shooting activities beginning Saturday, May 10, 2014 due to safety concerns. The closed areas are located in James Canyon, Lefthand Canyon, Mount Alto, and Sugarloaf Mountain.

 

The September 2013 flood caused extensive damage to the landscape and impacted areas on the Boulder Ranger District that are popular for dispersed recreation, including recreational shooting sport activities. Many flood impacted roads, trails and the Lefthand Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) area are currently closed for public health and safety reasons. The closure of the Lefthand OHV area has displaced recreational sports shooting to other locations and it is concentrated in four areas that are in close proximity to residences and flood recovery work causing additional safety concerns.

 

“It can be difficult to find safe places to shoot given the mixed ownership patterns within the district boundaries and the damaged caused by the flood.  We ask all shooters to use caution when choosing a location and use safe shooting practices.” said District Ranger Sylvia Clark.

 

Recreational sports shooters are reminded to safely disperse and follow the important rules and regulations associated with recreational shooting:

  •  Only shoot at cardboard/paper targets, manufactured metallic targets, or manufactured thrown-type clay targets.
  •  Shoot further than 150 yards from a residence, building, campsite, developed recreation area or occupied area.
  • Do not shoot on or across a National Forest System Road or adjacent body of water.
  • Do not shoot in any manner or place where any person or property is exposed to injury or damage.
  • Do not possess an open container of an alcoholic beverage while discharging a firearm.
