*Forestry Tip of the Day: What a Difference a Day Makes

Forestry Tip of the Day: Low humidity, strong winds, hot temps and an ignition are all it takes to start major wildfires in Colorado. As most of you are aware, several large wildfires erupted throughout the state yesterday.

If you are regular reader of this eNewsletter, then you know that days like yesterday are what we have been preparing for. We know that many of you reading this have been working nearly day and night to prepare your homes for future wildfires. Today, we wanted to applaud your hard work. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed, and we are continually amazed by your efforts to create effective wildfire mitigation on your land. Keep up the great work; you are setting an example for your neighbors, friends and the larger community! Thank you for all your efforts!!

Hopefully, we can use these fires as motivation to make sure our homes are ready. We need your help in our efforts to prepare all Boulder County residents for the next big fire. Help us spread the message of proactive wildfire mitigation. Talk with your neighbors, talk with your friends and encourage everyone you interact with to create effective wildfire mitigation on their land. We still have too many folks who live in the mountains who haven’t taken action. You can be the person to help deliver this important message and encourage your neighbors to better prepare for wildfires.

*Free Community Chipping Event: Jamestown – June 15
Got Slash or pine needles?? Then don’t forget to put it in a truck, or your neighbor’s truck or the back of your Subaru and haul it to our free-of-charge, community chipping event. Don’t have a truck? Then, rent a big trailer in Boulder for cheap!

This is a “you haul it, we chip it” style event and is first come first served. Once dumpsters are full, we won’t be able to accept additional material. Make sure to keep your pine needles separated from slash. We recommend putting pine needles in big garbage cans so they can be dumped directly into the dumpster.

View our event flier for complete details on location, hours and what we will and won’t accept.

* Community Meeting: Learn about Community Driven Fire Mitigation Projects that are being Planned for the Big Springs Neighborhood in Nederland – Thurs, June 13
Saws and Slaws is a volunteer-based group helping neighborhoods implement fire mitigation.  We bring neighbors and volunteers together for a morning of work doing fire mitigation (Saws) and then have a potluck in the afternoon (Slaws).  It’s a great way to work with your neighbors to reduce the danger of wildland fire at your home and in your community.    We are planning four events this summer in the Big Springs Neighborhood – roughly one per month.  We have support from the Town of Nederland and Boulder County to provide free chipping for these events.

We will have an informational/planning meeting Thursday, June 13th from 7-8:30pm at the Nederland Community Center, 750 Highway 72 North.   At the meeting, we will introduce the Saws and Slaws program and then discuss the best way to group homes together to hold the four events.  We already have over 15 property owners interested. If you are interested in having Saws and Slaws help you organize an event in your part of Big Springs or you are just interested in the Saws and Slaws program, please join us!
