Bar K Area Community Chipping Event

Posted on: June 21st, 2012
Hey Gold Hill Folks,

Left Hand Fire Protection District, the Bar K Association, Colorado State Forest Service and Boulder County are teaming up to offer a one day free of charge centralized slash collection/chipping event in the Bar K neighborhood (6 miles west of Jamestown on Overland Road) on Sat., June 30th. The event is open to all residents in the area. We highly encourage all county residents to create and maintain effective wildfire mitigation, aggressively fight bark beetles and work to create healthier forests in their backyard.

If you plan to haul material to this event please make sure to reference the attached “Bar K Area Community Chipping Event Details” document to ensure you understand what will and won’t be accepted at this slash event. We also went ahead and pasted a text version of the “Event Details Document” below my signature line. Since we are chipping everything we collect we have very specific requirements and loads will be turned away if it can’t be chipped. Landowners will only be allowed to drop off slash from 9 am until 3 pm or until we receive too much material. We are anticipating heavy usage at this chipping event so please be patient as you wait to unload material!

Feel free to contact me if you have questions. Please help spread the word about this free of charge event with your friends and neighbors.

Cheers,
Ryan

Bar K Area Community Chipping Event: –“You Haul it, We Chip it!”

Event Information for Community Members:
What:
Centralized Community Slash Chipping Event. “You Haul it, We Chip it!”
When: June 30th – accepting slash from – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Or until we receive too much material. Slash can not be dropped at the site in advance.
Drop off Location: Bar K Subdivision at 100 block of Ridge Rd, Ward, CO (The Bar K neighborhood is 6 miles to the west of Jamestown on Overland Rd).
Project Goals: Encourage area landowners to create effective defensible space and healthy forests on their land.

Material Accepted:  We will be chipping dropped off material directly into roll-off dumpsters. Because of this we have strict requirements on what we will and won’t accept. Loads of unacceptable material will be turned away.

·         Green Slash is preferred (we are encouraging proactive fire mitigation!)
·         Accepted slash should be between 1 inch and 6 inches in diameter
·         Dead/brown slash that is over 3 feet in length is O.K. but difficult to chip. If you have a lot of dead material that is a couple of years old it would be better for us if you hauled that material to the free of charge Allenspark Community Forestry Sort Yard Site
·         Keep slash in long lengths (long lengths up to 6 feet are easiest to fit in the chipper)
·         Cut widely spreading branches in half so they are easier to feed in the chipper
·         Load slash with fat end of branches facing the back of the load (makes it easier to unload and chip)
Material Not Accepted:

·         No logs or branches over 6 inches in diameter
·         No rotten material (it can’t be chipped)
·         No branches smaller than 1 inch
·         No lumber or scrap wood
·         No slash with metal in it!!!
·         No stumps
·         No raked up pine needles
·         If we determine that material can not be chipped we will turn it away
·         Larger logs can be hauled to the Allenspark area Community Forestry Sort Yard (http://www.bouldercounty.org/property/forest/pages/fhsortyards.aspx)

We Need Your Help! Volunteer to Make Your Community Safer from Fire!
·         We are seeking community volunteers who are willing to help us unload trucks for 1 to 2 hour shifts on Saturday? It would be fantastic if a few community volunteers were available to help us ensure this event is successful. You would help unload slash and hand it to our chipper operators. You would not be expected to run the chipper. Please contact Ryan Ludlow at 720-564-2641 if interested in signing up to volunteer for a short shift. We need your help!
Sponsored by: Left Hand Fire Protection District, Bar K Community Members, Colorado State Forest Service and Boulder County.
