During the September 2013 flooding, members of the Colorado National Guard and U.S. Army safely evacuated more than 1,200 Boulder County residents – the most aerial rescues since Hurricane Katrina.

These brave service members have been invited to be recognized for their extraordinary efforts at this year’s Airport Day on Saturday, June 14, at the Boulder Municipal Airport. This event will provide the entire Boulder County community with an opportunity to personally thank these men and women for their service.

At noon, Boulder City Council members will join Boulder County Commissioners in presenting plaques of appreciation to the leadership from the Colorado National Guard and U.S. Army 4^th Combat Aviation Brigade. This brief presentation will highlight the Boulder Municipal Airport’s role as the emergency operations, equipment, and supply center for the regional rescue effort.

Boulder Airport Day is a free event that will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and feature World War II, aerobatic, antique, corporate, and experimental airplanes; as well as gliders, civilian helicopters, and vendors. Military helicopters and ground support vehicles that were used during the flood rescue operation, as well as fire trucks and police vehicles from local agencies, will be on public display. Visitors will be able to climb inside the aircraft and vehicles, talk to the operators, and take pictures. This multi-agency exhibition will give community members a better understanding of how various agencies worked together to effectively respond to the flood disaster and the important role the airport played to facilitate and support those efforts. The family-friendly event will also include activities for children, food vendors, gift shops and the opportunity to purchase rides in a helicopter.
