Subject: Update regarding Mail Theft
To: “Sunshine Fire Prot. Dist. Communications” <sfpdcomm@nullgmail.com>

Dear Sunshine Residents:

Regarding the theft of mail in our district, I have an update. An arrest warrant has been issued for two suspects but they remain at large. The Sheriff’s Department reported that the individuals have missed several court dates and it is believed that they have left the area.

However, there have been more thefts since the original incidents. The Sheriff’s Department believes there may be several perpetrators stealing mail in our area. To date, there have been about 100 victims.

You are encouraged to report any suspected mail theft to the Sheriff’s Department. Here’s how:

Call the Sheriff’s Dispatch Office at 303-441-4444 to report the theft.

In a subsequent conversation with an agent at the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), I received some important advice. Essentially, you will need to protect yourself from mail theft. Thieves are looking for credit card numbers, social security numbers, banking and investment account numbers, gift cards, etc. I have attached a brochure published by the CBI that includes excellent advice for preventing mail theft.

Perhaps, the greatest threat posed by having your mail stolen is the theft of your identity. Again, it is your responsibility to be vigilant by checking credit card charges, bank account statements, and credit bureau reports. Some residents pay to have credit bureaus send updates and/or pay to register with proactive surveillance companies such as LifeLock.

Sorry, I wish there was more reassuring news.
