Forest Stewardship Tip of the Day: Both the Nederland and Allenspark Sort Yards are Open! Bring us your Slash and Logs!

Forestry Tip of the Day: Both the Nederland and Allenspark area sort yards are open and ready for your slash and logs! This spring Nederland’s remaining open days are on June 1, 2 and 8, 9. So make sure to take advantage of this limited spring opening. During the first weekend (May 18, 19) of our spring operation we had nearly 340 individual loads of material dropped off from 80 individual properties! The Allenspark sort yard is currently open on Tues.,- Sat. and will remain open thru July 7. For more info including location, material accepted and our hours please visit: http://www.bouldercounty.org/property/forest/pages/fhsortyards.aspx

Why is this important??  You can greatly reduce the cost related to forest management by hauling loads of slash and logs directly out of your forest to our free of charge disposal location. Obviously the closer you live to a sort yard the easier it is to use. However, you can load a lot of material into a utility trailer and I think you would be amazed at how much slash you can haul in one day!  FYI – I did a quick internet search and it looks like you can rent a large 12ft x 6 ft utility trailer for around $30 a day. Or even better maybe you can borrow your neighbor’s trailer and work together to reduce the workload. If you haven’t already I highly recommend you give the sort yard a try!

Rescheduled to New Date: Chainsaw Safety and Skills Training Opportunity: Sat., June 9

Note: this training was rescheduled to June 9 due to weather on the original date.

The Environmental Group (TEG) and “Saws and Slaws” of Coal Creek Canyon would like to extend an invitation to Boulder County resident to participate in an upcoming chainsaw safety and skills training. This training is being offered Sat., June 9th from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The training will start at Coal Creek Canyon Fire Station #1, 30579 Highway 72, and then will go to field later in the day.

This quality, hands-on training will give you the skills you need to effectively and safely use a chainsaw for forest health and property maintenance. The training will be presented in three parts: 1) Chainsaw Maintenance – cutting safely requires a well running saw. 2) Chainsaw Safety & Personal Protective Equipment – including things to watch out for while cutting. 3) Tree Felling & Cutting Skills – classroom review followed by field exercises. Presented by: Eric Philips, Wildfire Mitigation Coordinator for Boulder County and Eric Folwell, NWCG ENGB, Forester and Forestry Consultant to Boulder County

Participants: Please bring the following: a lunch, plenty of water and your own gear (including: chain saw, helmet, gloves, ear and eye protection, chaps.  Wear long sleeves, pants, and sturdy work boots). Space is limited for this training. Please contact Cesar Gellido at 303-818-7897 or cgellido@nullgmail.com if you would like to sign up to participate in this training. The training cost is $40 per person.  There is an opportunity to work off the classroom fee with volunteer labor during one of Coal Creek Canyon’s regular Saws & Slaws community forestry events.  When you register for the training ask Cesar for more details about how to “volunteer” to work off the classroom fee.

Announcement: Nederland Spring Clean-Up Day is Saturday June 2

The Town of Nederland and Boulder County Resource Conservation are once again offering a free of charge (for some items) Town Clean-Up Day this Sat. June 2. This event is a great opportunity to haul away all the flammable “junk” that you might have stored outside your home. Remember that many homes were lost in the Fourmile Fire because folks didn’t realize how dangerous it is to keep flammable debris located within 30ft of your home. For complete details including material accepted, hours and fees charged please visit: http://nederlandco.org/2012/03/town-spring-clean-up-day-june-2nd/

Cheers,
Ryan
