Nederland Area Seniors Newsletter Subscribers –

A note of clarification on the attached newsletter:  The “Other Events of Interest” on page 2 is a list of events to consider outside of our NAS offerings and we would be happy to post any online that you would like to get a group together to attend. The only NAS-sponsored outing on that list is the highlighted BIGfoot hike, which repeats on our NAS calendar on Page 4. The calendar on page 4 lists NAS-sponsored outings or events we plan to attend together.

We extend a warm invitation to those who have yet to attend a lunch with us. Please join us to try a meal at no charge. If you have attended a dinner or breakfast, you already know how awesome our chefs are – same staff and similar menus at our lunches twice a week.  See menus on page 3…

We received the following email after press time for the published newsletter and share the following volunteer opportunity with you from Tammy Forrest, 5th grade teacher at Nederland Elementary School:

Our Nederland Elementary School 5th graders are participating in a project through which they are exploring their passions and interests. Each student will be designing their own website which highlights them over the course of the year. We are interested in finding mentors to work with our students once a month beginning in December and ending in May with a big showcase and are reaching out to members of our community. Our kids have varied interests and we are hoping to be able to find some mentors so we can offer some cool experiences. We need mentors for the performing arts, visual arts, cooking, farming/gardening, martial arts, foreign languages, robotics and/or computer programming, photography, forestry, etc.

Our plan is to have the mentors meet with the students once a month on a Friday afternoon for two hours (1:00 – 3:00) in small groups. We are hoping to create relationships through experience and curiosity. The dates we are wanting to commit to include Tuesday, November 15 from 3:00 to 4:00 for an introduction and orientation. December`9, January 13February 17March 17April 21, are all Fridays and would be from 1:00 – 3:00. The big event is scheduled for the evening of Thursday, May 4.

You may contact Tammy at tammy.forrest@nullbvsd.org.

We look forward to seeing you at a meal or event soon!

Newsletter – November, 2016

President’s Podium By Jim Guertin

November has arrived. As we all know, that means it’s time for elections. Please take time to vote in

the upcoming federal and state elections on Nov. 8th. We also have elections for the NAS Board coming up in December. Some of our current board members have completed their terms, so we will have some openings on the board to fill. Please consider if you would like to assist our organization by running for one of the open positions. Nominations are due in early November.

Once again, I want to ask you to consider helping with the Holiday Mountain Market and Silent Auction.
The funds raised from this event are essential to support the continuation of the Senior and Mountain MidLife programs. Please consider devoting a few hours of your time to assisting with this year’s event. Contact Se- rene for information on how you can help – 303-258-0799.

HOVAB Art & Aging

“Dances of the Colored Leaf: A Positive Look at Art and Aging”, a discussion with panelists Gayle Crites, Jack Collom, Art Lande, Alan O’Hashi and Mary Wohl Hahn, moderated by Jennifer Heath, is one of many free conversations, presentations, and gallery displays in the History of Visual Arts in Boulder (HOVAB) celebrations through January. Let’s hear from talented older adults who make their living in the arts. Wednesday, November 2, 6:30-8:30 PM, Dairy Arts Center, 2590 Walnut Street, Boulder, 303-440-7826.

Girl of the Golden West

Set in a mining camp in Colorado during the gold rush of 1849 with all the elements of the wild west, this opera captures an era in complex emotions. Composer Giacomo Puccini (La Bohème, Tosca and Madama Butterfly) considers it his best work. The story centers around big-hearted bar owner Minnie, who teaches the miners, rebuffs the married sheriff’s advances, and falls in love with another, while the mining town tries to rid itself of bandits and protect her. Join us for this all-new Opera Colorado production at the Ellie in Denver on Saturday, November 5, 7:30pm. The ticket cost of $55 is reduced to $40 for the first ten mountain residents over age 60 to sign up with us, thanks to a grant from Boulder County’s All Age Well funds. Reserve your space and pay by Tuesday, November 1. Call 303-258-0799 to order tickets or ask for details.

Conversation Café

Let’s get to know one another better, share wisdom, and learn new ways of interacting with friends old and new. Certified discussion leader Pam Sherman and Lucy Stroock launch the Conversation Café after lunch on Monday, November 14. Our initial topic relates a time when you were challenged–during the fire, flood, or any other time that comes to mind. What happened? What did you do? What worked, what didn’t? What advice would you give us if we were in a similar situation? Join us for lunch at Noon-call 303-258-0799.

Silent Auction & HMM

We are at crunch time with the Holiday Mountain Market and Silent Auction on December 3 & 4. If you dine out, buy services, or shop regularly at any location, including “down below”, please ask if they would like to gain visibility for their business in the mountains by donating to our nonprofit organization’s silent auction. We’d love to hear from everyone by 11/18 with the donations you have for it. We can provide paperwork re our tax-exempt status, a solicitation letter, and a form to submit the item—just ask at 303-258-0799.

Luncheon Program

Medication Interactions & Flu Shots: Local Pharmacist Rick Fortunato discusses common prescription drug interactions and offers flu shots at lunch, Wednesday, November 2. Bring insurance cards for shots.

Paul Chappell will also be teaching a workshop on peace leadership skills in Boulder the weekend of November 12-13, 9:30am-4:30pm. MFP offers the $65 workshop to us at no charge. Easy Ways to Contribute

We always recommend shopping locally, but also recognize that many of us shop online for items we cannot find in our local stores. Our families post their wish lists and we enjoy giving what we know they will like. This holiday season, and throughout the year, please consider us while shopping online at Amazon by using their https://smile.amazon.com and select Nederland Area Seniors as the charitable organization that will receive a donation from them valued at 1/2% of your purchase. It’s that easy. Just start with a “smile.”

For our donors and members who prefer to use credit cards, please mark your calendar for Colorado Gives Day on Tuesday, December 6. Donors may set up their contributions any time beginning November 1 at www.COGives.org and set them to launch on 12/6, when a bonus helps us cover the 2% fees. If you prefer to use checks, please mail to us at NAS, PO Box 188, Nederland CO 80466. Thank you for supporting NAS!
