Posted on: October 13th, 2011

Dear Community Leaders and Fire Chiefs,

Attached is a invitation for  your mountain residents and fire fighters to take part in a HAM radio training offered by BCARES.  Please post this to your lists so that your residents can decide to whether or not they would like to take the test.

Thanks,

Amy

HAM Radio Training Offered to Mountain Residents

BCARES (Boulder County Amateur Radio Emergency Services) played a very important role in providing alternative forms of communication during the Four Mile Canyon Fire.  Local community leaders and fire chiefs have been working together to strengthen that role in an attempt to help our mountain communities be better prepared in the case of another natural disaster.

This project (Mountain Emergency Radio Network – aka MERN) is going to provide a significant resource for our mountain community residents.  As you know, the first resource to be lost in a fire or flood is commercial power and with it goes all land communications and in most cases, cell phone connectivity is also lost.  Today – during an emergency, that leaves no effective method of communicating for our mountain residents.

The MERN network will provide a significant level of communications for these folks and in so doing, should also reduce if not eliminate the rumor mill that tends to confuse and put people at risk.

Boulder County Amateur Radio Emergency Services (BCARES) will be providing both equipment and training for mountain residents who are interested in learning HAM radio operations.  This training will prepare you to take the federal certification test and participate in the MERN network.

To date, there are two scheduled trainings:

Saturday, October 22nd from 9-3pm at the Nederland Community Center

Saturday, October 29th from 9-3 at the Gold Hill Fire Barn

The final test date will be determined soon.
