*Forestry Tip of the Day: Three Fall Wildfire Mitigation Tips
Today’s tip is simple. Answer the following questions.
1) Are your gutters full of pine needles and leaves?
2) Are your wildland grasses cut back within 30 feet of your home to a max height of 6 inches?
3) Is your firewood pile located in a safe location?

*News: Wapiti Prescribed Burn at Heil Valley Ranch Open Space Canceled for Today, Rescheduled for Sunday (weather permitting)
Staff from Boulder County Parks and Open Space and the Sheriff’s Office Wildland Fire Management Program postponed their plans today to carry out the final phase of the Wapiti prescribed burn at Heil Valley Ranch due to high winds.

The park will be open Friday and Saturday, and will be closed on Sunday, Nov. 9, to continue the prescribed burn (weather permitting).

The Wapiti prescribed burn covers approximately 150 acres and is located around the Wapiti and Ponderosa Loop Trails. From Oct. 25 to Oct. 30 approximately 32 acres were burned in the north section of the unit. On Sunday, fire personnel plan to burn the remaining acreage within the burn unit.

*Colorado State Forest Service: Low-Cost Seedlings and Shrubs
The Colorado State Forest Service (CSFS) seedling tree program is now accepting applications. Each year the CSFS Nursery grows 2 million tree and shrub seedlings and makes them available to rural landowners at a nominal cost.

Boulder County Landowners can order seedlings from either CSU Extensions in Gilpin County or theLongmont & Boulder Valley Conservation District in Longmont. It is first-come first-serve, so order early.

We recommend folks living at Higher Elevation order thru CSU Extensions in Gilpin County since they have a later spring delivery date (better for planting at high elevation). To order visit:http://www.extension.colostate.edu/gilpin/hort/tree.shtml.  Please call them (303-582-9106) to check for availability and for help in choosing the right plants.   Payment must accompany order, and trees will be available for pickup April 29 from 4-7 pm (free planting class at 6:30).

Lower Elevation Landowners can order thru Longmont Conservation Services. To order visit:http://www.longmontcd.org/Seedling-Tree-Program. Please call them (303- 776-4034 x101) to check for availability and for help in choosing the right plants.   Payment must accompany order, and trees will be available for pickup on April 10 and 11 (free planting class on April 10 at 8:30am and 1:30pm).

Cheers,
Ryan
